Facebook is adding Tor support on Android devices

We have some great news for those of you who are privacy-conscious when it comes to browsing the web. Today, Facebook announced that it will begin supporting Facebook over Tor via the Orbot Proxy Android App.

In 2014, Facebook made it easier to access its website securely and privately via Tor-enabled web browsers by releasing its very own Tor onion address. Many in the community were thrilled with this move, but still, others wanted to see Facebook further the initiative onto other platforms. Facebook seems to have listened to its community here, and is enabling such support on Android devices.

If you are wondering what Tor is, it is basically a way to browse the web anonymously. According to Tor’s own website,

The Tor network is a group of volunteer-operated servers that allows people to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. Tor’s users employ this network by connecting through a series of virtual tunnels rather than making a direct connection, thus allowing both organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy.

If using this method to browse Facebook on your phone seems appealing, good news, you only have to follow a few short steps. First, you can head over to the Google Play store to download the Orbot: Proxy with Tor app. Then within the next few days, when Facebook actually releases this option to the masses, head over to your Facebook app’s settings page to enable the option via this new switch. Then you are all set to browse Facebook securely and privately!
