The one and only Evan Blass is sharing information about what the next HTC flagship will bring to the market.
Everyone, critics and consumers alike, collectively bashed HTC last year when the company released the One M9. The phone came in underwhelming, feeling like HTC didn’t push for innovation and only resorted to playing it safe. While other phones had Quad HD displays and killer cameras, the One M9 was ‘ho-hum’ internally. And the aluminum exterior no longer mattered because other companies were upping their build quality. So it came down to HTC promising (but not eventually delivering) timely software updates. Deciding to not compete with Samsung and LG head-on in a specifications showdown hurt the company without question. Outside of offering a shiny exterior and timely software updates, consumers were given little reason to go with HTC over the competition. Things should have changed with the One A9, but HTC dropped the ball again and released high-priced phone without high-end specs.
Fortunately for those consistently expecting more from the company, it seems HTC is finally going to deliver high-end specs in every area. The company’s upcoming flagship, known as ‘Perfume’ internally, should pack everything you want in a premium device. On the outside, little is known about what will be presumably known as the One M10 because HTC hasn’t finalized the design. But what Blass did learn from his source was that the rear camera will go from 20MP to 12 Ultra Pixels, a decline in megapixels that multiple hardware manufacturers are making. The camera also comes with “laser-assisted autofocus” and both rear and front-facing cameras have optical image stabilization. Back on the front, the One M10 will apparently lack front-facing stereo speakers.
It is stated that the phone will have a “Samsung Galaxy-like” home button with an integrated fingerprint scanner, which means HTC could be ditching on-screen buttons. You may recall from my review of the One A9 that HTC oddly included a fingerprint scanner in a smooth home button on the front while also keeping on-screen buttons. That was confusing and messy.
Internally, HTC is really going for it. The One M10 is said to have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM, an Adreno 530 GPU, and 32GB of internal storage. Around 23GB of internal storage will be available to the user, but a microSD card slot is included to allow expansion. The AMOLED display, which will stay at 5.1 inches, has Quad HD (2560×1440) resolution. HTC has never pushed a phone with a Quad HD display on the global stage, something that has caused many consumers to overlook their devices.
HTC’s Sense 8.0, probably the best software overlay around, will be put on top of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
Blass says that the HTC One M10 will not debut at MWC 2016 next month. That decision was probably made because HTC wants to host a standalone event to avoid being crowded by competitors.
