Twitter hopes to use fan tweets to advertise big brands

Twitter is preparing a new service that gives companies access to tweets posted about their own products, the idea being that these messages can be used to advertise the brands further.

According to a report from Digiday, Twitter is referring to the new scheme as the “brand enthusiast gallery”, set to consist of a database of brand-related tweets that advertisers can look through.

Advertisers were told about Twitter’s upcoming ad tool during last week’s CES show, according to sources.

Twitter will need permission from a user whose post it decides to display as part of an advertising campaign, however. The social network will contact the individual on behalf of the brand hoping to use the material and things will continue from there.

Sources working for Engadget have said that the fan tweet gallery is already being tested, with ‘speed and simplicity’ said to be the focus for the tool’s makers.

Celebrities are already relied on by advertisers to promote products through tweets, so the idea of social media posts being used to sell a product isn’t anything new. Still, it’ll be interesting to see exactly how our tweets are used by the world’s biggest brands in the future.
