So there has been quite a lot of confusion regarding what markets would be getting the Exynos or the Qualcomm variant of Samsung’s latest flagship phones come March 11th. It seemed like the International variant would be getting Samsung’s in-house Exynos 8890, while the whole North American market would be seeing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. It looks like that isn’t actually the case; the Glaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will come equipped with the Exynos 8890 in the Canadian market.
Traditionally when Samsung dual sources its processors for phones, say the Galaxy S5, it splits variants between the North American market and the International market. This means a majority of consumers every year are able to purchase Samsung’s latest flagship with its in-house Exynos processor. This led many to believe that Canadian consumers would only be able to get their hands on the Qualcomm variant, but it looks like this is only the case for American consumers.
The reason for this boils down to widespread use of CDMA networks in the American market. Apparently Samsung’s newest Exynos processor does not support CDMA networks, whereas Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 does. Only one carrier in Canada, Bell, continues to operates a CDMA network and that is for consumers who prefer to use feature phones over smartphones. This enables Samsung to sell the Exynos variant in Canada, whereas in America there would be a pretty big compatibility problem.
Last year Samsung decided to forgo Qualcomm’s troublesome Snapdragon 810 altogether. This turned out to be a very prudent move with all the overheating issues the 810 had, and the fact that the Exynos 7240 processor just overall preformed better than Qualcomm’s chip. We haven’t been able to see either Qualcomm’s or Samsung’s latest chipsets in action so it is impossible to know what chipset is going to preform better in real world conditions, but I know I am one American really hoping that the Snapdragon 820 can stack up to the Exynos this year.
