Reports coming out of Korea indicate Samsung is working on a variety of special edition versions of the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones. Headlining these special versions and likely to be the first one out of the gate will be a special edition that ties in to DC Comics’ upcoming film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with an expected release date in March or April.
Last year Samsung struck a deal with Marvel to tie-in their flagship phones at the time, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, with the Marvel universe via a special Iron Man edition. Production of those devices was limited to only 1,000 units making them quite rare. They did come with special wallpaper, ringtones and media as well as custom packaging and colors for the device.
For Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Samsung will have a couple primary characters to choose from, so we will have to see whether both Batman and Superman versions are produced. DC Comics has also started to make more of the fact that Wonder Woman is in the film with some of their recent trailers, although a feature film dedicated to that character will be coming later, so she probably will not see a version released with this round. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to be released on March 24th, so any device connected to the movie should appear soon after that even though this will come on the heels of the main device reveal. Still, that could be a month after initial sales commence if rumors of pre-orders on the same day as the launch are accurate.
Along with the movie tie-in, reports indicate Samsung has a couple other variants planned for later in the year. One of these includes a special edition that ties in to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Another version will tie-in to popular Asian pop music group EXO, although it is not clear whether that will focus on a particular member of the group or several members.
