Google confirms Android Pay will launch in the UK in the coming months

It seems that everyone is launching a mobile payments system these days, in the United States at least, anyway. Here in the UK we basically just have Apple Pay, which is of no obvious use for Android users, along with Barclay’s bPay solution which is limited to its own customers. Back in February, it was reported that Google might launch Android Pay in the UK in the coming months, and today the search giant has confirmed this is the case. 

Google has announced that Android Pay will support banks such as First Direct, Bank of Scotland, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, MBNA and Nationwide Building Society. It’s possible that notable omissions such as RBS will join the ranks before Android Pay actually launches.

Supporting retailers include Aldi, Boots, BP, Costa, Greggs, KFC, Pret, StarBucks, Superdrug, TFL and Waitrose. Another way Android Pay will make it easier to spend your hard-earned dosh is that you will be able to use it to checkout in apps such as JD Sports, Deliveroo and KickStarter, among others.

While it’s great that Google has confirmed that Android Pay is coming to the UK, is it too much to ask for a specific launch date or even month? And will Samsung Pay pip it to the post? Let us know if you are looking forward to Android Pay launching in the UK.
