Samsung is creating a new social network that the company is calling Waffle; however, it might not make it an official launch if executives determine it’s not showing enough promise.
The Korean tech giant demoed Waffle at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and calls it a “content-sharing application that enables users to create a new feed of expandable content.” Users will also be able to add to existing content, as if all contributing to a graffiti wall, as Samsung puts it.
This is the basis of Waffle, as per Samsung:
“A travel enthusiast might start a feed with a photograph taken on her latest trip to Tokyo. Then, others might add, say, a digital doodle of a sumo wrestler, a quote about traveling or an image of some beautifully plated sushi. In this way, Waffle offers a new, differentiated service that illustrates multiple points of view to generate a collaborative story.”
It’s an interesting take on a social network, but it might not have promising results. Many have tried to create new social networks, claiming it’s the next Facebook or Twitter, only for that social network to have fallen off the face of the earth. Waffle might not meet the same fate, but it has an uphill battle to face if it wants to make a name for itself.
Waffle might not even make it to prime time, though. Samsung showed the new social network off at SXSW, but at the same time, it’s still in its early stages of development. And, if it doesn’t show enough promise by this summer, it’s likely that Samsung executives will pull the plug on the project.
On the other hand, it could do really well, and as a result, we could see Waffle on Android and iOS later this year.
We’ll have to just wait and see what’s in store for the new social network.
