JBL’s latest noise cancelling headphones use a USB-C plug

JBL headphones USB CThe writing is on the wall for the 3.5mm headphone jack; the rumor mill is talking up its demise in Apple’s iPhone 7, but even manufacturers on the other side of the fence are bracing for a new technology. JBL, for instance, is releasing its latest pair of noise cancelling headphones that use a USB-C connection instead of the old-fashioned 3.5mm jack.

JBL has announced these headphones on the same day as the HTC 10, promoting the USB-C connection that HTC is using. That port provides both power and audio to the headphones, which covers the noise cancelling aspect without needing an external battery. The headphones are also sweat resistant and a 14.8mm driver, so you should get impressive sound of these in-ear buds.

While JBL announced the headphones, they did not announce pricing or availability for the Reflect Aware C. We’ll likely see them in the next few months, and the price tag probably won’t be swaying many budget buyers. Noise cancelling headphones on their own generally run upwards of $200, so throwing in some sweat resistance and a brand new standard for a headphone jack on top of that? Yeah, it definitely won’t be cheap.

Personally, I wouldn’t make any headphone buying decisions for a few months until you see how things shake out. Buying a high end pair of headphones that uses a 3.5mm jack might come back to haunt you next year if all of the flagship phones are announced without the port to support them, and then you’re going to be stuck buying USB-C headphones anyway. But if you want to make the plunge and go for something that’s probably more future proof, JBL is giving you an option.
