The expansion of Google Fiber will continue, this time with larger volume, as the second and third largest cities in the United States are being considered to get Google’s high-speed internet and television service. Google wants to bring its superior gigabit connection to the more than six million people living in Los Angeles and Chicago.
As always, Google provided its own reasons for considering these two new cities for Google Fiber. Los Angeles is already home to some 40,000 jobs in technology and Chicago has a “fast-growing startup scene.” Google Fiber should be able to assist in the many ventures that people and businesses embark. Those YouTube stars located in Los Angeles? The incubators in the Windy City? They’ll all be uploading videos quicker than you can imagine with Google Fiber.
Three cities — Kansas City, Provo, and Austin — are currently operating Google Fiber and offering service to their citizens. That number is bound to grow as the upcoming Google Fiber cities include Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte, Atlanta, Nashville, San Antonio, and Salt Lake City. Among the potential Google Fiber cities joined by Los Angeles and Chicago are Jacksonville, Tampa, Louisville, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, San Diego, Irvine, San Jose, and Portland. All of the cities mentioned are working with Google to evaluate whether or not Google Fiber is capable of running and sustainable to invest in. Each city is given the Google Fiber Checklist to assist them during the evaluation process.
