Lenovo president Chen Xudong further confirmed that Google will be bringing the Play Store and its corresponding services back into China in 2016, according to a new report from Tech.Sina.

Google’s desire to reenter the Chinese market is no secret. On the contrary, the search giant has been very public with its hopes of bringing the Play Store and its services back to the Chinese market.

An earlier report indicated that Google could bring the Play Store back to China soon after the Chinese New Year, which could be anytime after February 8. However, this new comment from Xudong doesn’t provide a timeline as to when we could see a reentry into China.

Google originally pulled the Play Store from China due to stiff censorship laws that the company didn’t want to comply with. The search giant is rumored to comply with censoring content, at least according to what the Communist Party might view as sensitive.

It’s clear that Android is the most popular smartphone operating system in China. It would make sense for Google wanting to make its presence known within the region.

However, plans to bring the Play Store back to China is only the beginning.

China and Google’s future

Bringing the Play Store back to China could be a breath of fresh life for large Chinese smartphone makes, such as Xiaomi and Huawei. But plans go further than that. China is a region that hasn’t been touched much by Google. That said, the search giant wants to use a success Play Store launch as a launching pad for other products.

In other words, if the new Play Store launch were to be a success in China, Google’s glowing relationship with Huawei could mean the Nexus 6P and other products could soon come to the Chinese region. That idea isn’t too far off either.

The search giant in October partnered with Mobvoi, a mobile voice recognition company based in China. It’s the same company that Google chose as its partner to bring Android Wear to wearables inside China.

There hasn’t been much word about the partnership since October, but it’s very obvious that Google is putting pieces in place to bring more than just the Play Store to China.

China is a big market for Android, a market that Google really wants to tap into. Between this report from Lenovo and Google’s partnership with Mobvoi, we could begin to see some serious expansion into the Chinese market this year.
