A lawyer revealed in court this week that Android has generated $22 billion in profit since 2008, but Google is saying that number never should have been revealed.
Android’s profit was revealed Jan. 14 by a lawyer for Oracle Corp., which is suing Google for using Oracle’s Java software without paying for it to develop Android.
Google said the information was gleaned from confidential financial documents. In a court filing from Jan. 20, Google urged a federal magistrate judge to redact and seal portions of the transcript of the hearing.
“Google does not publicly allocate revenues or profits to Android separate and apart from Google’s general business,” Google said in the filing. “That non-public financial data is highly sensitive, and public disclosure could have significant negative effects on Google’s business.”
A spokesperson for Oracle declined to comment in court about the disclosures.
