Huawei isn’t well known inside the US, aside from a glowing partnership with Google to produce the Nexus 6P. However, the company exuberantly revealed their plans for a big push in the US, bringing the company’s Honor brand (and other smartphones) to US shores.
The Chinese-based company revealed last night that the Honor 5X will be coming to the US in the near future. It’s a sleek handset, featuring a Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage.
Huawei’s Honor 5X is running the company’s own EMUI 3.1 skin atop of Android 5.1 Lollipop. There’s been no word on a Marshmallow update, which is disappointing. Some other neat things the Honor 5X is sporting includes a best-in-class fingerprint scanner, a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 display, and a 3,000mAh battery.
Consumers might find that the Honor 5X’s best selling point is it’s battery, said to last up to two days of continuous usage. Mileage may vary with that statistic, but Huawei claims you can get a full day of charge after 30 minutes on the wire.
For the camera aficionado, Huawei packed a 13-megapixel rear camera in the Honor 5X. It has the company’s own SmartImage 3.0 processor, which betters image quality in low-light conditions.
Around the front is a 5-megapixel camera, featuring a 22mm wide-angle lens that has a 88-degree viewing angle. It also has f/2.4 aperture in tow. The Honor 5X isn’t without its disappointments, though.
While Huawei has made an excellent product, it’s missing a near-field communication (NFC) chip in the device. That was one of the biggest gripes in the OnePlus 2. As far as future updates go, we’re hoping that Huawei won’t manage them same way as it’s doing in India.
Not too giddy about the Honor 5X? Huawei also revealed a gold matte color variant for the Nexus 6P, available from the Google Store.
Huawei is planning on selling the smartphone through its own HiHonor.com, as well as Amazon and Newegg. It will sell for an appealing price tag of $199 unlocked.
Huawei has certainly sold this as a “no nonsense” smartphone. We’ll have to see just how well it does once it launches later this month.
