Digital album sales sales fell significantly in 2015, Nielsen Music reports.
Digital track sales declined 12.5% from 1.1 billion in 2014 to only 964.8 million units sold in 2015. Digital sales also fell 12.5% from 2013 to 2014.
Physical album sales declined 8.3% in 2015, from 150 million in 2014 to 137.5 million in 2015.
The news for the recording industry isn’t all bad, though.
The number of songs streamed in 2015 increased by just over 48% from 2014’s totals. In 2014, 164.5 billion songs were streamed. In 2015, that total increased by 152.7 billion songs to 317.2 billion – an increase of 48.1%.
On the physical side, vinyl continued its resurgence in 2015, despite an overall decline in physical album sales. Vinyl sales increased 29.8% in 2015, from 9.2 million in 2014 to 11.9 million in 2015. Additionally, 14 albums surpassed 40,000 vinyl sales in 2015; only three accomplished that feat in 2014.
Not surprisingly, Adele dominated on both the digital and physical sides. Her album 25 sold 5 million CD copies, 2.3 million digital copies and nearly 116,000 vinyl copies. That accounts for a whopping 3% of total album sales in the United States in 2015.
