The WiFi Alliance has introduced the world to WiFi HaLow, a low power WiFi solution set to feature in smart home appliances and gadgets of the future.

This new technology extends WiFi into the 900 MHz band and looks to benefit users across the globe, offering longer range and lower power connectivity to WiFi certified products.

A post on the WiFi Alliance website reads:

“WiFi HaLow’s range is nearly twice that of today’s WiFi, and will not only be capable of transmitting signals further, but also providing a more robust connection in challenging environments where the ability to more easily penetrate walls or other barriers is an important consideration”.

If HaLow is as effective as its creators are hoping, then we’ll be seeing the technology inside smart home appliances, cars, healthcare products, retail gadgets and more.

The WiFi Alliance has said that HaLow ‘enables the low power connectivity necessary for applications including sensor and wearables’.

Discussing further applications, the WiFi Alliance has said: “WiFi HaLow will broadly adopt WiFi protocols and deliver many of the benefits that consumers have come to expect from WiFi today, including multi-vendor interoperability, strong government-grade security, and easy setup.”

If HaLow succeeds in its mission to effectively offer improved WiFi, then that’s good news for all of us.
