Tap your fridge for food with Groceries by Mastercard app

Mastercard has announced a partnership with Samsung at CES which means Samsung Family Hub refrigerator owners can now order food right from the appliance.

The process of ordering food from the Family Hub is made possible by the Groceries by Mastercard app, the first tool of its kind integrated directly into a refrigerator.

From launch, users of the refrigerator app will be able to make food orders using FreshDirect, ShopRite and MyWebGrocer. Items are added to a cart and then the purchase is approved with a 4-digit pin, with the appliance accepting ‘all U.S-issued credit and debit cards’.

Betty DeVita, Chief Commercial Officer at MasterCard Labs, said:

“In a world where every device – from the phone to the refrigerator – is connected to the Internet, the ways in which consumers interact and transact with their favorite brands are changing”.

We’re told that Groceries will learn more about a family’s shopping habits through continued use, therefore being able to make personalised suggestions based on past orders. New features are set to roll out in the future, including recipe and video integration.

A smartphone companion app for Groceries allows family members to add items to the group shopping cart from their own device.

Samsung’s John Herrington said:

“Just as Family Hub changes the way we interact with our fridge, the new Groceries app will change how consumers shop”.

The Samsung Family Hub refrigerator will be available in the U.S. in May of this year, with the service first launching in the tri-state New York City market.
