It’s never too early for Android N rumors! We just received word that Google might shockingly ditch the app drawer in the next major update.
The app drawer is one of Android’s oldest features, and 2016 may be the year Google finally does away with it. According to those at Android Authority, the app drawer is missing on an early pre-release version of Android N. However, this doesn’t mean that Google won’t add it in before the public release or beta version, which should arrive early this summer.
No app drawer could make for a totally different user experience on Android. It seems like a big risk if you ask me. This will make the operating system a lot like iOS, which fails to incorporate a variety of customization tools like those in Android. Google may be considering this move so that pushing Android updates to manufacturers and carriers is easier, and can be rolled out at a faster rate. However, this is just an assumption. Many of us wouldn’t appreciate the app drawer going missing because of the customization options that may flee with it. This is one feature Android has been highly praised for.
This report sparks lots of questions about the direction Google is headed with its next big update. Considering the fact that this past year’s Android M update was very minor, Google might have something totally new and exciting in store for this year. Let’s just hope it’s one that the general consensus likes, because I’m not so sure this is it. We’ll find out in a matter of months.
