Panasonic has announced the Toughpad FZ-N1 at MWC, a rugged smartphone built to last thanks to a super sturdy shell and strengthened glass.
The Android-powered smartphone will be an ideal work phone for those working in tough conditions or hands-on jobs such as construction sites and the like. Panasonic says that the Toughpad FZ-N1 can take plenty of abuse and is both dustproof and submersible.
Panasonic’s new gadget will go on sale in March, with the Wi-Fi version on offer for a rather hefty $1,499. A ‘voice-based version’ is due later in the year, although the price for that device is unknown at the time of writing.
The Toughpad’s makers have clearly been particularly thorough when it comes to testing the strength of the phone, too. A Panasonic spokesperson said:
“The slim and lightweight Toughpad FZ-F1 and FZ-N1 feature a drop rating of 6′ and have also passed a torturous tumble test that saw the devices endure 2,000 consecutive 3.3′ drops – so they can stand up to the abuse of the most demanding enterprise and government usage environments.”
The Toughpad FZ-N1 features a 4.7-inch screen and is powered by a currently unnamed 2.3Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. On top of that, the handset can survive in up to 3.3′ of water for around 30 minutes.
Under the hood , the smartphone is equipped with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. Panasonic has been referring to the Toughpad FZ-N1 as a ‘handheld tablet’.
The high price of the Toughpad FZ-N1 will make it a device for a very select set of people, but Panasonic is certain that the smartphone has what it takes to survive the toughest of conditions.
