Indian manufacturer Ringing Bells has just unveiled the world’s cheapest 4G-enabled smartphone, the Freedom 251. The budget-friendly device has been developed so that everyone in India can embrace the power of the Internet, and for a mere Rs. 251 ($4) it’s something I’m sure that the majority will be able to afford.
Astonishingly, Ringing Bells hasn’t had to make too many sacrifices in the power department as the Freedom 251 packs quite a punch. Under its full-glass unibody, you’ll find a 4-inch LCD display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels, a 1.3GHz quad-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable internal storage, a 3.2MP rear-facing camera and a 1,450mAh battery.
Although the Freedom 251 carries the title of an entry-level smartphone, It’s pretty fantastic that the company has been able to pack so much capable hardware into the handset. The device even comes with a complimentary 1-year warranty and ships running the latest build of Lollipop straight out of the box. However, it’s safe to say that it won’t be receiving the Marshmallow upgrade.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to head out and buy the Freedom 251. Instead, you’ll have to register your interest. Registrations will take place on Thursday, February 18, and will involve you inputting your contact details. This is simply to stop people looking to make a quick buck heading out and buying the entire inventory. When it’s your turn to purchase the handset, you’ll receive an email with a link to a checkout page.
