As any social media platform grows, eventually it will start to grab the attention of businesses that want to establish a presence. Snapchat announced they are rolling out a new feature that will help business and other organizations jump on their bandwagon while at the same time capitalizing on the popularity of geofilters. To help generate some revenue, Snapchat is now offering paid geofilters that use custom graphics and can include logos for businesses and brands starting at only $5.
The original geofilters, including community contributed filters, focused on locations, typically public places. The new geofilters can be tied to things like an event or a business in addition to a location. Those who are interested in the new geofilters can select not only a geofenced area, but a time and date for the geofilter. This can range from as short as an hour up to 30 days. The fee for these new custom geofilters will start at $5 and go up depending on the length and the size of the area covered.
Snapchat indicates the geofilters being proposed through this new program will have to pass through a vetting process. However, that should only take a couple days for a quick review before the new geofilter is up and running. Initially, the new geofilters will only be available in the U.S., the U.K. and in Canada, but Snapchat says more locations will be added soon.
