Amazon Video building new virtual reality platform

Amazon Building

Amazon Video is rumored to start building a new VR platform, according to a new report from Upload VR.

There has been no official announcement, but the publication spotted job listings on Glassdoor for Amazon Video, where the company is looking to hire a couple Senior Software Development Managers for virtual reality.

The posting itself isn’t cause for speculation, but the description pretty much gives it away that Amazon Video is creating a virtual reality platform. In fact, the description goes as far as saying that they’re looking for someone to “lead [their] Virtual Reality team” and will be “building the Virtual Reality experience within Amazon Video.

If that didn’t give it away, this pretty much does:

“The Virtual Reality team will explore and create the platform and interface for immersive storytelling. This will include an ingestion and playback platform for Virtual Reality experiences.”

We’re not sure what all of this could entail for the future of Amazon Video, but it does appear that Amazon Video could be looking to create something along the lines of 360 video, something Netflix expressed interest in not that long ago.

Amazon Video said that “the future will not be limited to passive 2D experiences.” And they’re right, but this platform will take them a good amount of time to build. There’s also the whole problem where there’s not a whole lot of virtual reality content out there, and much of the VR content that is being developers is quite a few years out.

That said, don’t expect anything from Amazon Video soon. We’re at least a year or two out before Amazon has anything solid to show the public.
