HTC’s share price jumps 20 percent in two days thanks to HTC Vive and other wearables

In recent times, when we’ve discussed HTC’s share price, it’s usually to report that it has dipped once more (or even plummeted), worsening the Taiwanese handset maker’s financial predicament. Which makes this article much more pleasant to write, because today we have news that HTC’s share prices jumped up by more than 20% in since Friday last week, and is now sitting at $99 TWD (Taiwanese Dollars).

The sudden increase in share price caused the Taiwan Stock Exchange to suspend trading of the stock for the day as per its regulations relating to sudden increases/decreases in share prices, which has left HTC’s stock at its highest level since June 2015.

So, what can the jump in share price be attributed to? Certainly not HTC’s latest unaudited revenue report that it released last week revealing the company’s lowest figures for monthly revenue. It’s thought that this recent increase in both stock price and investor confidence has been brought about by two things; the warm reception that the HTC Vive headset has received, with more than 15,000 pre-orders in 10 minutes, and its HealthBox units made in partnership with Under Armour. The growth of its wearables line-up means that HTC could have a viable alternate stream of revenue to ease the company’s dependency on its smartphones division.

The Taiwanese handset maker will no doubt hope the upcoming announcement of the HTC 10 will help maintain this newfound momentum. While this is nice little bump in share price, the growth needs to be sustained over a period of time in order for HTC to turn its fortunes around. But, it’s a great start, and every time you think that this could be the end, the handset maker comes up with a solution. This time round, though, HTC needs to make it stick.
