With season 4 of House of Cards dropping on Netflix a couple of days ago, it’s been a while since some of us got out from in front of the television. Despite being utterly engrossed in the show, something that many eagle-eyed viewers noticed, besides the Underwoods being deplorable characters with few, if any, redeeming features, were the numerous sightings of OnePlus smartphones being used by the show’s cast.

Multiple characters are shown using either a OnePlus 2 or OnePlus X handset, and even the OnePlus One gets in on the act. According to tech.qq.com, the product placement cost OnePlus somewhere in the region of $300,000, with House of Cards being chosen because of its worldwide popularity and was arranged by a mutual friend.

Product placements are far from being uncommon, we’ve seen House of Cards parading Apple, Samsung and BlackBerry products in previous seasons. How many times have you watched a program and someone was flashing a certain fruity brand around? I remember the sci-fi program, Fringe, had someone using a Dell Streak as a seismograph in one of its episodes. Many tv shows do it, and it isn’t restricted to tech companies either. Product placement extends from vehicles and clothing to food and drink, and like all advertising is designed to help us part ways with our hard-earned cash.

Did you notice the House of Cards cast using the OnePlus handsets? If so, what did you think of it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
