Apple. Just reading the name of the fruity company can stir up some strong emotions in my fellow Android fans. Every year we see a new iPhone being released, and we mock the people that buy them as well as picking apart the handset and all of its erm, new features. Apple took the wraps off of the iPhone SE last week, a diminutive 4-inch handset that has been criticised for appearing all too similar to the iPhone 5S and apparently isn’t selling too well.
According to the mobile analytics company, Localytics, the iPhone SE experienced a lacklustre reception in the first few days after its launch, garnering only 0.1% of the iPhone market in its first weekend. Needless to say, the 0.1% is much, much less than what previous models such as the iPhone 5s achieved in their opening weekends, as you can see from the graphic below. Localytics comes by these figures by how many devices identifying themselves as the iPhone SE when accessing the internet.
It would be easy to turn this article into a blowhard’s rant against Apple, and laugh at this apparent failure. However, I don’t believe the iPhone SE is a flop. I don’t believe that Apple ever believed that it would take the market by storm. Instead, I believe that the iPhone SE is Apple creating a new cycle in which it can release a new model without cannibalising the sales of its larger flagship, which this year will probably be the iPhone 7/7 Plus. Make no mistake, Apple will learn from the experience.
Despite boasting up to date hardware, the 4-inch iPhone SE will ever only appeal to a small segment of iPhone fans. Who would buy such a small device, I hear you ask? And why haven’t those people followed the trend of owning a handset with a bigger display?
Well, how many times have you heard an Android fan lament that there aren’t enough sub 5-inch smartphones out there with high-end specs? No doubt there are iPhone fans saying the same thing about 4-inch devices. Not everyone feels comfortable with a 5.7-inch smartphone in their hands. While the iPhone SE will never be a hit, perhaps Apple just wants to keep its customers safely inside its walled garden, and not give them cause to look across the fence to see what the Android world has to offer.
We don’t usually cover Apple stuff on this site, after all, we love Android and much prefer writing about the world’s most popular mobile operating system. But once in a while, it’s interesting to talk about what’s going on behind the walled garden that Apple maintains, even if we never intend on visiting.
What do you think of the iPhone SE? Is there a place for it? Or has Apple made a mistake in releasing a phone that resembles the iPhone 5S so strongly? Are you still laughing about Apple releasing such a new/old phone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
