Marshmallow still sits below 5% in Android distribution for April 2016

It’s that time of the month when Google publishes the Android distribution numbers showing which versions of the mobile operating system are rising and falling worldwide.

The only version of Android to grow from last month is Marshmallow, which climbed from 2.3% to 4.6% while moving into fourth place in terms of popularity.

Hit the break for the full breakdown.

As seen in the graph and chart above, older versions of Android still dominate. Lollipop and Marshmallow still don’t even account for 50% of Android distribution. To capture a majority, KitKat needs to be included with its successors. But, at the very least, it’s good to see Lollipop is the most popular version of Android in the world. There’s really nothing for Google to worry about because devices will be making the jump from Lollipop to Marshmallow in the coming weeks and months.

The following is a list of the percentage point changes from March 2016 to April 2016:

  • Froyo: 0%
  • Gingerbread: 0%
  • Ice Cream Sandwich: -0.1%
  • Jelly Bean: -1%
  • KitKat: -0.9%
  • Lollipop: -0.3%
  • Marshmallow: 2.3%

Starting with Android N, these numbers could start to better skew in Google’s favor. That version of Android, which we’ll see at Google I/O 2016, is already being put into production for developers and Android OEMs to work with. The earlier Google gets Android N out to everyone, the earlier everyone can get their apps and software overlays compatible and optimized. That means Android N should arrive for non-Nexus devices quicker than any other version of Android has in the past.
