In the continuing moves by Lenovo to shed the Motorola name from their branding portfolio, we saw the company part ways with president Rick Osterloh last month. Fans of the former president of Motorola will be pleased by news that Google brought Osterloh back into the fold to head up a new division managing hardware lines.

According to a representative from Google, Osterloh is joining the company as a Senior Vice President that will oversee the company’s Nexus line of devices, Chromecast devices, Chromebooks and Pixel C devices, OnHub, ATAP, and Glass or Project Aura. Needless to say, there are quite a few high profile lines of hardware in Osterloh’s new portfolio of responsibility and this move seems to say a lot about how highly regarded Osterloh is by CEO Sundar Pichai.

Besides the fortuitous timing of Osterloh’s departure from Lenovo, Google was able to start making this move after Regina Dugan decided to depart for Facebook. Dugan was running the Advanced Technology and Project group, ATAP. Her departure appears to have triggered a decision within Google to undertake some major reorganization related to hardware.

Fans of Glass may like this move as well. The product had previously been moved to the purview of Tony Fadell and Alphabet’s Nest division. Nest is focused more on home automation products whereas Glass appears to be on track to be targeted at enterprises, so the fit may not have been the best. Nest and Fadell have also been receiving quite a bit of attention for alleged strife regarding Fadell’s management style.

Another employee who may be impacted by the move to add Osterloh to the team is Android SVP Hiroshi Lockheimer who will be able to focus more on software and Android platform development. That could be good news for Android fans hoping for ever more innovation in the platform.

This will not be the first time Osterloh’s employment has fallen under the Google umbrella. He was part of Motorola a few years ago during the time when Google owned the company before selling it to Lenovo.
