Rumor: Android apps might finally run on Chrome OS with Play Store integration

Have you been anxiously awaiting for the ability to run Android apps on Chrome OS? Well, that might not be too far out, as a user on Reddit stumbled across something that indicates that Play Store and Play Services integration is on its way for Chrome OS.

In the Developer Channel of Chrome under “Settings” he briefly saw a setting that said “Enable Android Apps to run on your Chromebook.” It may just seem like a pipe dream, but another Reddit goer confirmed the same thing, and even provided an image of what seems to be the screen for setting up the Play Store on Chrome OS:

Beyond that, a look into the source code shows multiple references to this new Setting as well as the dialog that pops up.

So, what does this all mean? Well, it means that something is in the works to offer some sort of cross-compatibility on Chrome OS with Android Apps. Having access to Android Apps in Chrome OS would certainly make the operating system that much more valuable, and it might even bolster Chromebook sales if it were to happen.

However, don’t get too excited. Nothing is official until it’s, well, official. We haven’t heard any word from Google on this just yet. Rumors in the past have indicated that Chrome OS and Android would merge, but Google shot that down, saying that both would continue to be independent projects. Of course, that doesn’t mean that there can’t be a little cross-compatibility, thus this new feature in the works.

One thing’s for certain: with only a month to go, Google I/O is going to be interesting this year. We’ll no doubt hear a lot more about this at the conference, and we’ll probably even see a fully functioning demo.

Sit tight, folks. It’s going to be interesting how this plays out!
