The second generation Philips Hue app comes with a modern UI and and added functionality

If you have the Philips Hue lighting system installed in your house, you’ve probably been left a little dissatisfied with its clunkiness, possibly to the point of having to rely on one of the many serviceable third-party apps. It seems that Philips may have taken notice because it’s just published a new app to the Play Store called Philips Hue Gen 2. The second generation Hue app includes a new, dare we say, even modern UI and some added functionality.

As you can see from the screenshots above, the UI is much more modern and user-friendly. Possibly the change I most appreciate are the toggles for switching the lights on and off. On the Gen 1 app, I always managed to accidentally turn the incorrect light on when working the sliders. If you have the type of Hue bulb that displays a myriad of colors, the app will match the chosen color for that light’s specific room. And let’s not forget you can customize the scenes to suit your requirements.

Having your lights on a daily routine is also easier. The confusing Alarms & Timers section has been removed,  and instead, we have a clear and concise tab called Routines that allows you to schedule when your various lights turn on and off. There’s a Home & Away tab (not to be confused with the Australian soapie of the same name) for when you go away on vacation, which is also location aware,so the lights can turn off when you leave the house, and then on again when you return if you wish.

There is also a Wake up setting where you can fine tune when your light turns on, for how many days a week, as well as an option to have the light gradually brighten up over a period of up to 60 minutes to emulate a sunrise.

It should be noted that the Philips Hue Gen 2 app is a separate app, the original is now the Gen 1 app and will not simply update to the new version. If you’d like to install the Philips Hue Gen 2 on your device, the Play Store link below will take you directly to the listing. The new app should also be available from Apple’s App Store if you roll that way.
