David Marcus, Facebook’s VP of Messaging Products, revealed in a blog post that Facebook Messenger now has over 800 million monthly active users. He also provided a quick rundown of everything that happened in 2015 as well as what to look forward to in 2016.
Facebook believes that Messenger is more than just an instant messaging service, though. Marcus in his blog post said:
“At Messenger we’re thinking about how we can help you interact with businesses or services to buy items (and then buy more again), order rides, purchase airline tickets, and talk to customer service in truly frictionless and delightful ways.”
Marcus is looking forward to Messenger becoming a place for people to purchase products and services from businesses as well. While Marcus did say they had some initial success in testing, it’s not yet clear how this will be integrated and how users will react to it becoming more than just a platform for interaction between friends.
It could be interesting to see how Facebook will integrate a feature like this, especially if it has plans for not being available on the Play Store.
Suffice to say, Messenger has a big year ahead, and we’re looking forward to seeing how Facebook can continue to transform it into an innovative service that everybody wants to use.
