Although Google may have aspirations of being a major player in the IT infrastructure of major corporate enterprises, that does not mean parts of the company do not have time for some fun and unique projects. A team with Google Maps in their Street View group recently got to spend some time playing – make that working – on creating a Street View experience of the Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg.
The Miniatur Wunderland is the largest small scale model railroad in the world, located in Hamburg, Germany. The tiny location includes 13,000 kilometers of roads and railway line, a functioning model airport, and over 200,000 “citizens” that call it home.
All of it was mapped by the Street View team using tiny cameras that were mounted to tiny Google Street View cars that then road the streets and railroads of the tiny world. The cameras were designed by Ubilabs and were custom designed and built just for this project.
Google staffers indicate the project provides a unique perspective of Miniatur Wunderland since all of the images that were captured are at the scaled down “street level” view instead of looking on from above as the typical visitor does. This provides details of things like farmers riding on a broom or a newlywed couple leaving a ceremony that one may not normally notice.
In addition to the oldest part of the model, which is a fictional town called Knuffingen with 10,000 “inhabitants” and a bustling market, the model makers includes lots of other scenes from around the world. There is a football game being played at a stadium in Hamburg, scenes from an Oktoberfest celebration, the strip from Las Vegas, a portion of the Grand Canyon and even Mount Rushmore.
