Smartphone manufacturers are on a constantly speeding up cycle of releasing new smartphone models to replace the last greatest thing and hopefully entice consumers to keep dropping the dollars on hardware. This means the odds are good that consumers have old, abandoned smartphones lurking in drawers and boxes. If you happen to have a Galaxy Nexus from a few years ago, you may be able to repurpose it with Android 5.1 Lollipop running aboard thanks to the team at CyanogenMod.
The Galaxy Nexus, originally launched in 2011, fell off the upgrade cycle when Google moved from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to Android 4.4 KitKat. The Galaxy Nexus was left behind allegedly due to the TI chip it was running on.
Although owners of the Galaxy Nexus were able to enjoy some benefits of KitKat via installation of CyanogenMod 11, development of that platform stalled out over the past year as well as the CM team moved on to CM 12 based on Lollipop.
A new nightly build that was just released adds the Galaxy Nexus to the list of devices that can make use of CM 12.1, which is based on the Android 5.1 Lollipop build. Since it is a nightly build, it may not be the most stable option for daily use, but who would still be using a Galaxy Nexus for daily use at this point in time?
If you have an old Galaxy Nexus laying around, you may want to go dig it out of the corner of the closet, visit the source link below, see if you can get CM 12.1 fired up on it, then figure out a new use for your old hardware.
