It’s been a long time coming, but it seems as if Android Pay is making its way out of the United States across the pond to the UK. According to the British newspaper, The Telegraph, Google will launch its mobile payments system in the UK at the end of March.

Apple Pay made its debut in the UK last year, but Android users have generally been out in the cold when it came to mobile payments systems. All this will change in 2016 though, the launch of Android Pay next month. Samsung Pay is also due to arrive in the UK later this year, meaning that UK smartphone (Android) owners will soon have a choice of payments systems to pick from. More than half the smartphones owned in the UK use Google’s Android operating system, which means the take-up of Android Pay should be swift, so long as Google puts in the effort to educate both retailers and users alike.

Android Pay requires an Android handset (or tablet) to be running Android version 4.4 KitKat or higher with the NFC (Near-Field-Communication) function present. Users will be able to enter their debit or credit card details onto the Android Pay application, enabling them to make contactless payments at payment terminals featuring NFC.

Hopefully, the imminent launch of Android Pay means that the major UK banks are on board because some banks such as Barclays already run their own contactless mobile payments system through NFC via Barclay’s bank application.
