Xiaomo claims 14 million people have registered for Mi 5 Flash Sale on March 1st

Xiaomi took the wraps off of its latest flagship, the Mi 5, in Barcelona at MWC 2016 last week, and I think it’s fair to say that the Chinese handset maker blew everyone away with the design, pricing and specifications of the device. The highest spec variant, with its 3D ceramic body, will launch initially in China, and it would seem that Xiaomi’s new handset has been well received in the company’s home territory.

According to Xiaomi, more than 14 million people have registered to take part in the Mi 5’s inaugural flash sale that is due to be held on March 1st. It’s unknown just how many Mi 5 handsets will actually be available to order, but it’s extremely doubtful that Xiaomi will have 14 million of them on hand. So it’s likely that the flash sale will be a manic affair, I’m expecting to hear Xiaomi proclaim that the Mi 5 was sold out within seconds.

Xiaomi hasn’t yet revealed which Mi 5 variant will be up for grabs at tomorrow’s flash sale, so it could be the 32GB/3GB version with the lower clocked Snapdragon 820, the 64GB/3GB or 128GB/4GB version on offer with the 2.15GHz Snapdragon processor, or any combination of the three. You can check out the rest of the Mi 5’s specifications below to understand why the Mi 5 is generating such interest:

  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow, MIUI 7
  • 5.15-Inch Full HD IPS display (600 nits, 1920 x 1080 resolution, 428 ppi)

Xiaomi is launching the Mi 5 in China first, with India following suit afterwards, but the company has been vague about when, or even if, the Mi 5 will be available in the west. Despite the lack of details, it is thought that the Mi 5 could be the company’s breakthrough device in Europe due to its launch in Barcelona. One thing that is certain is that the Mi 5 has generated a lot of interest, and will help propel Xiaomi past last year’s record of selling 70 million handsets.
