Ringing Bells, the makers of the Freedom 251, have confirmed that 30,000 units have been sold. Even so, none of the units will be made in India.

Speaking to Gadgets 360, the technology group has clarified that the Freedom 251 smartphone’s will simply be assembled in India rather than created, and all of the components for the gadget will be imported.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the group has addressed confusion surrounding the email confirmation system, which was meant to send out payment messages to anybody who had registered.

A Ringing Bells representative told Gadgets 360:

We were working out details of cash on delivery, which we are announcing now, so we will be sending emails to the first 2.5 million people who registered with the site – less 30,000 – to give them the option to pay online or when they get the phone.”

Originally, emails were meant to be sent out to registered customers within 48 hours, however this hasn’t happened.

Addressing the subject of assembly, Ringing Bells has said that although parts are currently being imported, the group hopes to be in a position to make the smartphone itself fully within ‘six to eight months’.

The Freedom 251 is the world’s cheapest 4G-enabled smartphone, selling for a mere $4 and featuring a 4-inch LCD display.

Elsewhere, the gadget comes with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels, a 1.3GHz quad-core CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of expandable internal storage, a 3.2 MP rear-facing camera and a 1,450 mAh battery.

It’ll be interesting to see just how well Ringing Bells copes with the demand for the Freedom 251 smartphone.
