Snapchat adds new web player to present Stories in conjunction with Academy Awards coverage

Snapchat continues their efforts to grow into a social media platform that can be accessed or referenced outside of actual users. Starting with coverage of last night’s Academy Awards, Snapchat showed off a couple new options for users to consume content available on Snapchat. The additions included a curated content stream called Stories and the ability to view this content on the desktop via a web player.

Until now, Snapchat content has not been available via the desktop. Users who stumbled upon a link to Snapchat content from their computer were simply redirected to an app to install on their mobile device. Last night though visitors to Snapchat.com were presented with a Stories feed of notable content from the Academy Awards. The Stories feature is very similar to Twitter’s Moments feature.

The Stories feed is still just a one-way activity merely presenting the curated content. To do anything more with it, users have to use their smartphone app. However, some have noted that this may set the pieces in place for Snapchat content to be embedded in other sites. Snapchat would like that to happen to help drive users to their platform as they continue to try to grow.

Just last week Snapchat introduced new On-Demand Geofilters to the service and earlier this year code was found hinting at possible audio and video calling capabilities being added. The service also enabled profile URLs earlier this year as they move to become a bigger player in the social media landscape.
