Facebook Messenger getting Material update on Android

Facebook’s head of their Messaging Products division announced an update to the Facebook Messenger on Android app that will start rolling out later today. David Marcus announced the changes and describes it as a “major redesign” of the app. Looking at the images posted by Marcus, it appears Facebook is bringing Google’s Material design guidelines to the Messenger app.

Once updated, users will notice the top banner of the app is switched from being white with blue icons and text to being Facebook blue with white icons and text and the app will also trigger a change in the notification bar to be color consistent. The icons themselves get a little bit of tweaking as well.

The new message button changes from an editing pencil to a plus symbol. The lower area also gets overhauled with the new message entry box moving above the ribbon for attaching photos, movies, emojis, and other items. Facebook also makes more use of an overflow button now with a few items being moved off the main screen.

Despite the “major” moniker, the update appears to be mostly cosmetic and does not appear to include any new features or functions.
