How to use the “Edge” on the Galaxy S7 Edge

Samsung’s long-awaited Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are finally here, but some aren’t familiar with the big differences between the devices. The different is actually that one has a curved “Edge” screen while the other is your everyday compact, high-end smartphone. What benefit does the Edge screen have on you? It gives the user quick access to all of their most used applications, most frequent contacts, and quick access to a bunch of other things.

In this guide, we’re going to show how to setup your Edge preferences as well as how to use Edge. Be sure to follow along below!

How to use the “Edge” Display

Using the Edge display is quite easy, as it’s setup by default. To use Edge, all you have to do is drag the Edge panel handle to view all of your Edge panels. This is usually found near the top right of the Galaxy S7 Edge’s display. From there, you’ll find access to things like Tasks Edge, People Edge, and other information.

Suffice to say, using the Edge display is quite easy. However, it’s highly customizable if you don’t like its position. Head on into Settings > Edge Screen > Edge Panels > Edge panel handle settings.

From there, you can choose whether the handle slider sits on the left or right side of the screen, as well as set custom transparency options and the size of the handle.

You can also choose what type of panels are shown. If you go into Settings > Edge Screen > Edge Panels you can select and deselect the different panels. For instance, all I have selected is People Edge and Tasks Edge; however, other panels are available to enable, such as Apps Edge, Samsung Milk Music, and plenty of other helpful panels.

Samsung even gives you the ability to download other types of Edge panels. Some are free, but the most useful ones will cost you around $1.50.

The other aspect of the Edge panel is the Edge Feeds. You can find these by going into Settings > Edge Screen > Edge Feeds. From there, you can choose what feeds are shown on the side panel, which can be your favorite stocks, missed notifications, the time, and so on.

That’s just a quick primer on how to use the Edge display, and next, we’re going to show you how to use and customize the display from the Edge panel.

Customizing Edge

Customizing the Galaxy S7’s Edge display is easy. All you have to do is swipe left on the handle and then press the gear icon on the bottom left of the screen.

From there, you can choose different “tasks” to add to your Tasks Edge screen. For instance, you can add quick access for taking a panorama with the camera, quick access for creating an event, and there’s even quick access for sending a text message. That’s just a small look at the tasks you can add, as there’s plenty more other “tasks” available to you once hitting that gear icon.

You can do a similar thing with People Edge. In my case, I swipe left on the Edge handle and swipe left again to switch to the People Edge screen. From there, you can press the “+” sign to begin adding your most frequent and favorite contacts. There’s also an icon at the bottom right of the screen that lets you open one of Samsung’s proprietary apps, OnCircle. This is a place where Samsung says you can send “fun and exciting” messages to your favorite contacts.

Once you add a contact, you can then select that contact to quickly send a text message, phone call, or email. Of course, to send an email, you’ll need to have their email information added to the contact in order for that quick access to work.

And that wraps up our guide on how to take advantage of the S7 Edge’s side panel. It’s offers some neat features, but it won’t necessarily be loved by everyone. In my experience, I don’t really use the “Edge” panel that much, instead opting for the normal way I use my smartphone: unlocking it, and going to whatever app I need to use by navigating the home screen. It’s almost like you have to force yourself to use the Edge panel, sort of like you have to force yourself to use the S Pen on the Note 5, otherwise you’d never have a use for it.

The other thing about the Edge panel is that it doesn’t really add any sort of convenience to accessing applications and contacts. When it comes down to it, it takes the same amount of time to text someone by accessing the messaging app via the home screen than texting someone by accessing the messaging app via the Edge screen. Don’t get me wrong, the Edge is an innovating concept, but something I haven’t really found a use for myself. And maybe that’ll change in future renditions of the handset.
