Samsung investing in additional capacity to produce flexible OLED displays

Sources in Korea report Samsung Display is well on its way to expanding production facilities for flexible OLED displays. Samsung Display currently operates several facilities for flexible OLED production with the largest such location being their A3 plant in Tangjeong. That location currently has a capacity of 15,000 pieces of “mother glass” per month which will be doubled to over 30,000 pieces per month. The increase will be part of a larger effort to expand total production at all flexible OLED facilities from 39,000 sheets per month to 90,000 sheets per month.

Sources indicated Samsung has placed orders with 10 different companies that supply the equipment needed to produce flexible OLED screens. The orders are believed to exceed 400 billion won ($325.73 million USD) in value. The equipment supplies include companies like AP Systems and Rorze Systems who are planning on delivery in the fourth quarter of 2016. If the project sticks to that timeline, Samsung Display should be ready to turn up production about one year from now.

Analysts and industry watchers think part of Samsung’s move to expand production is tied to Apple’s plans to switch to OLED displays in the iPhone 8 which should go into production in 2018. Apple is already working with display producers like Samsung Display, Japan Display Inc. (JDI) and LG Display to make this change.
