Six Flags will allow you to ride a real roller coaster in VR

Anyone who has tried a virtual reality headset will be able to tell you that it is pretty cool. The only problem with them is you can only visually experience what is going on, and the entire physical portion is left out, until now. Six Flags will be equipping some of their roller coasters with Samsung Gear VR headsets.

Six Flags will be partnering with Samsung to debut North America’s very first Virtual Reality Roller Coasters. Riders will literally be strapped into a roller coaster in real life and experience an even more insane view in the VR world wearing a Gear VR.

John Duffey, Six Flags President and CEO said:

“This remarkable technology is a definite game-changer for theme park rides and represents everything our brand stands for – delivering the most thrilling and innovative rides and attractions in the world,”

Basically, riders sit in a roller coaster and will be able to actually feel the turns, ups, downs, speeds, and more. The VR video takes place in space and allows riders to be co-pilots in an air-to-air combat dogfight. The video is synced to the roller coaster, so if the video shows the plane going down the roller coaster will be about to drop as well.

Shock Wave at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, opening March 10 to Season Pass Holders as a special sneak preview
Dare Devil Dive at Six Flags Over Georgia outside of Atlanta, opening March 12 to Season Pass Holders as a special sneak preview
The New Revolution at Six Flags Magic Mountain near Los Angeles, opening March 26 to Season Pass Holders as a special sneak preview
Ninja at Six Flags St. Louis in Eureka
Steamin’ Demon at The Great Escape in Lake George, New York
Goliath at La Ronde in Montreal

If you are not a fan of flying in a plane, there will also be three new Superman VR coasters too. Riders will be able to look around and see the comic-book world of Metropolis as they are taken on a tour courtesy of Lex Corp Sky Tours. However, right after they depart, riders meet Lex Luthor. Him and his army start destroying everything in sight, but luckily Superman is near, and eventually saves the day.

The three Superman roller coasters that this technology will be featured on are:

SUPERMAN Krypton Coaster at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio
SUPERMAN The Ride at Six Flags New England in Agawam, Massachusetts
SUPERMAN Ride of Steel at Six Flags America in Upper Marlboro, Maryland

I don’t know about you guys, but this sounds like it will be pretty awesome. The only problem I could see with this is the Gear VR uses a Samsung phone for power and gets very hot after short amounts of use. Hopefully everything works well, but it would really suck to be the guy on the coaster who’s headset gets too hot and stops working.
