At GDC 2016, Oculus and Mojang announced that a special version of Minecraft was being developed for Samsung’s Gear VR. It would give one of the world’s most popular titles in history an immersive experience simply by adding a virtual reality headset. Mojang went live with the title for Samsung’s virtual reality headset earlier today, meaning owners of the Gear VR can start playing Minecraft.
Hit the break for details.
Anyone who has ever played Mojang’s flagship title will feel right at home. Only the actual gameplay will be different as you’re wearing the display on your face.
Minecraft for the Samsung Gear VR works with the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, and Galaxy S6 Edge. Since the phone powers the virtual reality headset, you’ll need absolutely nothing else to interact with the block-based environment; however, the Microsoft-owned developer says its best to play on the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S7 because older phones “might not run the game quite as well in true stereo or with as high a draw distance.” Despite that, it’s better than having to be restricted to a computer.
Minecraft: Gear VR Edition is priced at $6.99 and can be purchased from the Oculus Store.
This version of Minecraft does support cross-platform play with players on mobile devices and Windows 10.
Mojang also set up a new section on its site for all things virtual reality. The Gear VR and HTC Vive are currently displayed there, and support for the Oculus Rift is on the way as well.
