Icon packs are one of the best things about Android. There are so many out there, and because of that, you can really make your own unique interface. Whether you’re looking for something silly, serious, or well-designed, there’s something out there for you.
When it comes to customization, there isn’t much out there that’s better than icon packs. Many have tried, particularly Samsung with its Theme Engine. Unfortunately, even this Theme Engine isn’t better than icon packs. You’re supposed to be able to go into the Theme Store, find a theme you like, apply it, and be on your way. Unfortunately, there’s just not a lot of options there, and what is there isn’t any good. One thing’s for sure: The best icon packs will always remain on the Play Store, and there’s always more being added because the developer base is much larger that what Samsung or any other OEM trying to tackle customization will ever have.
That said, plenty more icon packs have launched on the Play Store since we last did a refresh of our best icon packs list, and we think these might just be the best yet. Check them out below and see what you think!
Click
Click is another icon pack we’ve featured in the past, but it’s gone through a ton of different updates since we last took a look at it. As a quick refresher, it’s toting almost 2000 icons in the pack, and features some beautiful rounded shapes with pastel colors and long shadows. It’ll fit in with almost any device setup, especially if you use one of the included high-definition wallpapers.
Click also has icon masking for launchers that support it. In other words, the unthemed icons not included in the pack will still have a similar look to the package as a whole. And of course, there’s an icon request tool for those icons you really want to see themed on your handset.
Flatee
Flatee is a gorgeous icon pack put together by designer Samer Zayer. As the name suggests, the icon pack is full of flat, circular, and colorful icons. There are over 1450 high quality icons in the package, which are all tested to work with the most popular launchers, including Apex, Nova Launcher, Action Launcher and ADW. I’m actually running this one on my Galaxy S7 Edge right now, and have been for a couple weeks now.
It hasn’t been updated since November 2014, but I have to say, this icon pack is one of the best still available. Of course, you get a ton of extras with it, as there’s a bunch of awesome cloud-based wallpapers included to match the icons.
Minoir
Minoir is a unique icon pack in that it downsizes your icons and also adds a dark shade to all of them. As the name goes, it certainly has that “noir” feel. There’s also plenty of wallpapers included in the pack to match the new icon pack. It supports all of the major launchers available, including Nova, Apex, and Action launcher.
Minoir is also regularly updated, always adding support for more icons. Right now, they have an arsenal of 1500 customized icons, and it’s only growing as new updates are applied.
Cygnus
Cygnus is another great icon pack, featuring some hints of Material Design. It has tinted edges and soft shadows, which truly make the icon pack pop. It’s still pretty unique beyond that, as it has different shapes and color for each icon, meaning it isn’t a “uniform” icon pack. One thing’s for certain: it’ll add a lot of variety to your home screen.
One thing to keep in mind is that Cygnus doesn’t have a lot of icons. It’s a small downside, only featuring a little over 800 in the pack. However, being a free icon pack, it’s worth taking it for a spin and seeing if it’ll fit into your home screen setup.
Clix
Clix is described as a flat, simple, and clean icon pack. And during my test run with it, it really is simple. The shapes are in union with each other, featuring a square design for each icon. The designed had an excellent attention to detail when putting these icons together, as they really pop with a good wallpaper. The colors are fairly neutral and flat, making everything just “flow” together.
There’s only 400 icons in the pack right now, but it’s being updated on a weekly basis, always adding more. In fact, there’s an icon request tool in the dashboard of the app, allowing you to request any of those unthemed icons. Overall, it’s a really neat pack worth checking out.
Flight
Flight is a flat and minimalist icon package. The icons are white, and feature all of their own unique shapes and sizes. There’s also a hefty amount of transparency in the icons, making them blend perfectly with many of the gorgeous backgrounds included in the pack. Flight might not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for a unique and minimalist design, it’s certainly the way to go.
And if you’re not too sure about it, there’s also a Flight Lite icon pack, letting you take it for a spin before you buy. Being a “Lite” package, you don’t get all of the icons included in the main version, but just enough to test out.
Closing
And that wraps up our monthly list of our favorite icon packs! Of course, we cannot cover every icon pack on the Play Store. There’s just too many. That’s why we keep a monthly running list of our favorites. And there’s always more being added; it’s almost impossible to keep up with.
That said, we’re handing the mic over to you. What are your favorite icon packs? What are you running on your device right now? Do you have a developer you keep going back to? Let us know in the comments below and we might just include it in next month’s post!
