Samsung’s Gear 360 was unveiled alongside the Galaxy S7 this year, but without a solid release date or price tag. We still don’t have the release date pinned down outside of Q2 2016, but the price for the advanced camera has shown up ahead of launch. If you were expecting something in the $200 range to compete with LG’s 360 Cam, though, you’re in for sticker shock.
The Gear 360 will run $349 on launch, which is a full $150 higher than LG’s 360 degree camera. That’s not to say that Samsung hasn’t earned that high price tag, since the Gear 360 is capable of shooting extremely high resolution photos and videos that are generally made to be viewed in a virtual reality headset.
There are two 15 megapixel sensors with dual fisheye lenses on the Gear 360, plus all the standard ports and connectivity you’d want: WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, and a microSD card slot.
At $349, though, Samsung has already lost the price war with LG, who is giving away the 360 Cam with some LG G5 purchases. It’s too early to tell if that’s going to hurt the Gear 360, but I think it’s a safe bet that this was going to be a niche product, anyway.
