The HTC 10 (surprisingly) supports Apple’s AirPlay

htc_10_camellia_red_for_japanMusic is a focus point for HTC, and that’s very apparent in the HTC 10. The BoomSound speakers are still present, and they’re even boxing in HiFi headphones with the phone to complement them.

But HTC is going a little bit further than any Android OEM has gone before and adopted a rival’s standard for playing music wirelessly. Yep, the HTC 10 has Apple’s AirPlay support baked in.

That doesn’t mean that everything is exclusively using AirPlay, so you won’t need to replace your Chromecast or Nexus Player or anything. HTC just happens to be one of the companies to license AirPlay from Apple, so everything should work with an Apple TV as soon as you turn the phone on.

The only catch is that you’re stuck with audio streaming with HTC’s implementation. No video streaming or screen mirroring, so if you need that kind of functionality you’re better off sticking with some form of Google Cast. But for anyone that’s got one foot in Google’s ecosystem and the other foot in Apple’s, this could be a nice bridge between the two that gives a little more flexibility between devices.

Plus, if you’re an Apple Music fan, this should definitely be a nice addition.

HTC is probably the only OEM we’ll see that pulls a stunt like this, considering the bigger fish like Samsung and LG are both busy making and enforcing their own standards. That’s a great selling point for HTC this year, though.
