Oculus opened their pre-order system today for the Oculus Rift device, an immersive high-end virtual reality headset, that has been hotly anticipated by the market. Early indications are that buyers are jumping in despite the high $599 price point as the earliest available ship date of March 28th is already sold out.

Initial shipments of the Oculus Rift will include several pieces of hardware in the box. Of course the Rift headset, with built-in headphones and mic, will be included. Oculus is also including an Xbox One controller and an Oculus Remote. The Remote will be used for navigation purposes outside of gaming, like when a user is accessing the Oculus store or trying to watch video content. The one item that will not be included in the boxes for early adopters is the Touch set of controllers. However, consumers who place a pre-order for an Oculus Rift will get priority when the Touch is released later this year.

Oculus will be including some software in the form of games with these early purchases as well. Buyers will get Lucky’s Tale and EVE: Valkyrie Founder’s Pack. Later in the year developers will be releasing several more Oculus Rift intended games like Rockband VR by Harmonix, Edge of Nowhere by Insomnia and The Climb by Crytek.

Besides revealing the price and expected ship dates with the opening of the pre-order system, Oculus also shared recommended PC system requirements. Buyers can access a compatibility tool that will check their system or they can work off the list below:

  • graphics card: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 equivalent or greater
  • processor: Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • memory: 8GB+ RAM
  • output: Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
  • input: 3x USB 3.0 ports plus 1x USB 2.0 port
  • operating system: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer

If your current system is not up to snuff, Oculus will help you out with that as well. They plan to make available a bundle for pre-order in February that includes a Rift and an Oculus Ready PC starting at a price of $1,499. If you want to look elsewhere for a PC, Oculus is also working with manufacturers to label PCs with an Oculus Ready badge to help consumers identify hardware that can support their new Rift.

Has anyone out there placed an order or are you planning to place an order for an Oculus Rift?
