Talk Android Apps of the Week: January 24, 2016

google_play_gifts

It’s Sunday, the time of the week when Talk Android brings you a report on some of the very best applications we’ve been using over the course of the past seven days. Today we’re focusing our attention on a fantastic payment service, a reliable sugar intake tracker, a third-party Android Wear store and last, but not least, an incredibly addictive game.

Payfriendz

The first application up this week is a great new payment service that equips you to transfer funds to family and friends effortlessly. Payfriendz is completely free to use, has a WhatsApp-like feel and enables you to send instant messages to ensure that your transaction goes smoothly.

Whilst it’s doubtful you’ll be giving up your PayPal account in favour of Payfriendz any time soon, the platform does pack some nifty little features that make it significantly more enjoyable to use, like, for example, group chats for mass-payments, which is pretty useful if you’re paying one of your family or friends for an outing they’re organizing. The app also utilizes military-grade security — so you can rest assured that your loot is in safe hands.

Requesting money on the platform couldn’t be easier. Simply send a message to your friend or family member using their username and input the amount. When the funds are sent, they’re instantly transferred to your account. You can then withdraw the money directly to your bank account or spend it online using a virtual prepaid MasterCard.

Change4Life Sugar Smart

It’s a well-known fact that too much sugar is bad for us, but with almost everything we eat and drink containing the substance, it’s very difficult to keep a record of how much we’re actually consuming on a daily basis. Change4Life hopes to put an end to all that with Sugar Smart.

The application features an extremely straightforward interface, which calculates your intake of sugar every time you put something in your mouth. Simply scan the barcode of the food you’re about to eat/drink, and Sugar Smart will give you the details of its sugar content, subtract it from your daily allowance and tell you what you’ll have left once you ingested it.

Unfortunately, the selection of foods is fairly limited. At present, only 7,500 products are currently in the database, which means that at some point you’ll scan something that won’t register. However, with new items being added continuously, it won’t be too much longer until this issue is resolved.

Wear Store

The next application we’re focusing our attention on is a must-have for all Android Wear smartwatch owners. Wear Store is a neat-looking, third-party database containing all of the 40,000 apps compatible with the timepiece operating system.

Sporting a design much like the Play Store, each entry comprises of a description, rating and screenshots — so you can find out all about the app prior to installation. If it looks like something you’re after, simply hit the Play button, and it will start to download.

Applications are arranged in different categories, which makes it super-easy to locate specific services. For instance, if you’re looking for a tool to track your workouts, just head into the Health & Fitness section where you will be presented with over 170 great apps to choose from.

Floors

Up last this week, we’re looking an addictive endless arcade game called Floors. All you have to do is tap on the centre of your smartphone or tablet’s display in order to make your character jump and clear the spikes in his path. If you do happen to come into contact with a spike, your player will be sliced in half, and you’ll have to start again. Progress is recorded based on the score you obtain — so the longer you go without being impaled, the more points you’ll be credited with.
