Trying to make a push into the wearables market, Qualcomm announced some new chips earlier this month that could be used in smaller devices while employing better energy management and improved connectivity. Growing the market also means finding new partners outside the traditional names and Qualcomm has done that with three new deals they announced today. The new companies will produce reference designs for new market segments.
Two of the new companies will utilize the new Wear 2100 chips in devices targeting specific demographics – kids and the elderly. Infomark, which has produced two generations of kid-oriented smartwatches already, will design new devices targeting kid and elderly watch segments. Likewise, Borqs will be focusing on the kid watch segment with their reference designs.
Besides those two companies, Qualcomm also entered into an agreement with Compal to produce reference designs for wearable devices. Compal lists a variety of companies on their client list including Acer, Lenovo and Dell. If we see devices coming out from these companies in the future, it may be possible Compal is behind them with the design and help with incorporating Qualcomm’s Wear chips.
