T-Mobile CEO John Legere says the carrier “set out to change this industry” and that the company is “well on our way and we won’t stop.” Based on T-Mobile’s fourth quarter and year-end results, being announced today, Legere appears to have lived up to that commitment.
According to the numbers released today, T-Mobile added a whopping 2.1 million customers during the fourth quarter and 8.3 million during 2015. That makes 11 straight quarters in which T-Mobile added more than 1 million customers and the third quarter in a row in which they added more than 2 million customers. Overall, T-Mobile now has just over 63 million customers on their network.
Shifting over to how these new customers impact financials, T-Mobile had net income of $733 million for 2015, including $297 during the fourth quarter. Total revenues for T-Mobile increased 1.1% year over year during the fourth quarter and they were up 8.4% year over year on an annual basis during 2015.
Looking forward to 2016, T-Mobile indicates they anticipate adding 2.4 to 3.4 million new customers during the year. That is obviously lower than what the company has been experiencing, but is not surprising given the maturing nature of the carrier and the market.
T-Mobile indicated they doubled their LTE footprint during 2015 and now cover a population of 305 million potential customers. The carrier’s “Extended Range LTE” covers over 190 million potential subscribers in over 300 markets. T-Mobile revealed they have entered into agreements to acquire 700 MHz A-Block spectrum that will cover 48 million people and brings their total low-band coverage to 258 million people. T-Mobile did not indicate where this new spectrum was located.
During their conference call Legere indicated T-Mobile will start some 5G network testing this year. However, he called out competitors for jumping the gun since standards will not be released for some time and once released, everyone will have to take some time to implement the new standards. Legere indicated other carriers my be engaging in some “horseshit” regarding their 5G rollouts.
