On Wednesday, Google went live with something for people who want to explore the world of music without spending a lot of money on fancy equipment and software. Chrome Music Lab is “a set of experiments that let anyone explore how music works.” And, like the name suggests, everything is easily accessible through Chrome on phones, tablets, and computers.
Chrome Music Lab offers the ability to play with sound, rhythm, melody, and other music-related items that I haven’t been able to grasp since my days playing the recorder in elementary school. Google is able to put a big set of tools like this on a web browser because of the Web Audio API. It’s a “freely-accessible, open web standard” that makes it possible for developers to create and alter sound in Chrome. If developers don’t like what Google is doing, they can build new experiments because the source code is open.
