Apparently, Google cares about AR more than VR

Google’s long-term focus is on exploring the power of augmented reality rather than virtual reality, according to a report from The Information.

The news, arriving courtesy of the tech publication this week, states that key Google figures Sundar Pichai and Clay Bavor think augmented reality will appeal to a wider market than VR ‘in the long run’.

Of course, Google was one of the first big names to release its own VR headset in the form of the Google Cardboard, but it looks like the company has other ideas looking ahead.

Meanwhile, The Information adds that Google reportedly isn’t convinced that many people are willing to invest in technology that requires them to wear giant headsets, such as the Oculus or Samsung’s Gear VR.

Back in January, we reported on news that Lenovo and Google were teaming up to release a Project Tango device, which would become the first consumer mobile to feature the technology. According to a press release from Google and Lenovo, Project Tango-enabled gadgets can recognize places they’ve been before, ‘like your living room, the office, or public spaces’.

It’ll be interesting to see how effective AR is at grabbing people’s attention in a market filling up with VR headsets from various manufacturers. Clearly, Google believes strongly in the future of AR devices.
